Bukittinggi: The Witness of A Life-Changing Experience for Future English Educators, A Pre-Service Teacher Camp by RELO US Embassy, Jakarta

As a student of English Education Department in an educational university, it is quite hard to find out an event that specifically meets my major perfectly to explore more about everything related to this area of study. Most of the existing events may focus only on education in a wide scope and the rest of them focus merely on English and its aspects (e.g. Linguistics, Discourse). Regarding to this issue, started from last year, Regional English Language Office (RELO) of US Embassy for Indonesia and Timor L’este comes out with a great breakthrough to hold a Pre-Service Teacher Camp for selected and talented 4^th year university students who will be future teacher of English. This EPIC Camp includes the activities of teaching workshops, brainstorming, learning, and fun. For the second time, this year it involved thirty-eight delegates from all over Indonesia and four delegates from Timor L’este. Fortunately, my due-date-application led me to be one of the participants of this exciting event to represent Bali and Undiksha. It took place in The Hills Bukittinggi Hotel, West Sumatera, in January 18-30.

Sport Day 2015: Be Sportive and Go Spartan

Have you ever heard about sport day before? Did you know its aims and main activities?

This year’s sport day has the same purpose with the previous ones. It is an annual program held to tighten solidarity and togetherness among students and lecturers of English Education Department according to Agung Riski Restu Aji during his speech who acts as the head committee of Social Gathering 2015.

Mr. Hery Santosa as the head of the English Education Department advised EED students to be sportive during sport day which was the second event during series of events of Social Gathering 2015. It was held on Sunday, 19^th of April 2015. In addition he also suggested the students to be willingly in supporting all agenda of Soc-Gath 2015 by shouting a yell “Go Spartan.”

Furthermore, sport day covered mass jogging, environment awareness action by picking plastic rubbish at ex-harbor of Buleleng, several fun games such as Bakiak Race, Karet Tepung, Terong – Terongan, Tarik Tambang and color splash as the main activities of it.

Actually color splash is the most eagerly expected agenda that brought difference compared to the previous year’s events. In this activity, EED’s students were asked to bring glasses to avoid the color powder’s splash irritating their eyes. At the end of the event, most of them took pictures showing their happiness and excitement; they had a colorful day and a colorful T-shirt. (Dapus)

Sensitivity Training in Becoming Good Leaders through Leadership Training

What comes up in your mind when you hear “Leadership Training”? Most of you might say that you have no clue whatsoever about it, but some of you would probably say that it is well known as PK (Pelatihan Kepemimpinan) which is one of the EED Students Association routine programs. This year, leadership training was held on Saturday, April 4^th, 2015. It was held indoor and outdoor.

The indoor activity was a seminar about leadership itself taking place at the theater room of Kampus Bawah. The speaker was one of EED lecturers, Dr. I Gede Budasi, M.Ed, Dip. App. Ling. He lectured about what leadership is, the concepts of leadership, and the characteristics that an ideal leader should have. He explained that a leader is the one who has skills in leading other people. Meanwhile, leadership is the whole activity or action in order to influence, to call up and to empower people to work together achieving the targeted purposes. Furthermore, a leader has to master management skill. Management skill concerns planning, optimizing the staff’s performance, effective communication, giving wages, conflict solving, and evaluation of the employees’ performances. The audiences who were the representatives of each class of the second, the fourth and the sixth semester were very enthusiastic in listening to his explanation.

Shortly after the end of the indoor activity at 13.30 pm, the leadership training participants gathered in front of Wantilan Kampus Bawah to attend the outdoor activity. The main agenda of the outdoor activity was outbound. Before outbound was started, Students scouts association led the body stretching activity. There were four posts of outbound spots passed by all participants in groups. Every post has its own challenging game. The games were ‘balon goyang’, ‘moving water’, ‘moving lakmus’, and ‘robot writer”. They were not merely games. There were hidden meanings within each games regarding leadership. For example, at the second post, the participants did ‘moving water game’. A glass of water should be put on a cloth. All of the participants should keep it balance until the finish line. It was not easy. It needed a good coordination among the group members. When it fell, the participants should try it again from the beginning and should not blame others. Team work was needed in achieving the targeted goal; “having more water” than the other groups. Those games are expected to give leadership values for the English Student Association especially, and for all people in general. (Dapus)

Open Recruitment in becoming the member of English Student’s Association 2015/2016

About 27 students of EED entered EED’s lecturing rooms on 3^rd of January 2015. The purpose was not to have any lectures but to join an interview in becoming member of English Student’s Association 2015/2016. Totally there were six chambers that they have to enter which will determine whether the candidates will be accepted or not. This open recruitment will be held in two days; 4^th of January will be the second day of its recruitment.

During the interview, all of the candidates were asked several questions. “Showing my own active participation for EED through becoming member of English Student’s Association is the reason why I joined this interview,” said one of candidates named Wira, 2B. On the other hand, another candidate named Suasta Jayendra stated his reason that he doesn’t want to be a merely a college student who only goes to campus for having class but more than that. Meanwhile, the others mostly said that through the organization they want to have more experience and having many new friends. As what had mentioned before, the candidates were not only asked their reason why joining that interview but also asked whether they are ready to sacrifice their time for EED’s ESA besides of their study (manage time not only for going to class and making college assignments but also having contribution through organization) and so forth. Great Sharing Time with Sanata Dharma University

What is your interpretation when another university visited our department? Most of you will have the same interpretation. Won’t you? Tuesday, 27^th of January 2015, Sanata Dharma University visited English Education Department of UNDIKSHA to have a great sharing time. About twenty students who wore brown coat entered Seminar Room of Language and Art Faculty of UNDIKSHA in the morning and were welcomed by a beautiful performance called Murat Wangi dance. In two hours, both Universities were not only sharing their academic activities but also non academic activities. At the end of the agenda, both EED of Sanata Dharma University and EED of UNDIKSHA gave their high appreciation one another which was symbolized by a memento.

Do you know who is eligible to be your leader? Do you have chance to choose your leader? Certainly, yesterday, 7^th of January 2014 was a special day for EED students choosing their English Student’s Association’s (ESA) leader. Three candidates were competed in interactive interview session at Auditorium of Ganesha University of Education; they were Nyoman Trijaya Suparyanta (3D), I Gede Widiana Pradana (3F), Gede Dharma Arya Wicaksana (3A). Finally, after voting session, Nyoman Trijaya with his best program “EEDs Back to Nature” was chosen to be ESA’s future leader. He got 305 votes.

Furthermore, at the same time, EED also elected the vice of the head of English Student’s Association. There were eight candidates who were ready to show their readiness becoming the vise chairman through interactive interview sessions. At the end of its interview, all of the English Student’s Association’s members were doing discussion in deciding who fit to be chosen as the vise chairman. After long discussion and several considerations, Yogi Satria Perdana (1C) was chosen.

At the end of its election moment, as the ex of English Student’s Association’s leader, Arya Bayu Permadi gave his advice to the younger generation. “Keep spirit, keep solid, keep ok, keep a good coordination among others, do the best and do better than the previous period. Don’t wait the result today, but later, believe or not you will feel the advantages in joining an organization!,” Arya Bayu said. (Dapus)

A day after Socgath (Social Gathering) socialization, on 8^th of January 2014 an open recruitment was held. It was held in EED’s lecture rooms. All of the division’s coordinators were gathered in front of English Student Association’s room before separated to the determined room. During two hours from 10 am until 12 am, the coordinators interviewed their member candidates. There are eight general divisions such as: Sie Perdek (Perlengkapan dan Dekorasi), Sie Pubdok (Publikasi dan Dekorasi), Sie TKT (Tempat, Keamanan, dan Transportasi), Sie Konsumsi, Sie Kesekretariatan, Sie Humas, Sie Kerohanian, and Sie Penggalian Dana. In addition, there are ten specific divisions such as Sie Soundcoustics, Sie EDC, Sie PRC, Sie Baksos, Sie Sport Day, Sie Workshop, Sie Bake Sale, Sie Social Evening, Sie GECo, Sie Potluck Party. Lunch time was taking arrest moment for the committees. Thus, the first recruitment would be continued at 1 pm until 3pm this afternoon. Moreover, the second recruitment will be held on 12^th January 2014. (Dapus)

Chapsa’s Performance: ‘If You are Born to be a Woman’

 

‘Theater is a process, and you only can get this euphoria in this semester, in this 5th semester. Later, you will miss this semester.’, said Miss.Sonia Piscayanti as her commented to the performance of 5C entitled ‘If You are Born to be a Woman’. This was the third performance of 5th semester on December 21, 2014 after 5A and 5F performance which was taken place as same as previously. This theater of absurd told the audience about a woman who struggle for delivering her baby. ‘Actually, there’s a change of this performance’s look. At first, Widya as the main character who act as the pregnant woman was standing to take a birth, but then, just few hours before their performance, Isaid to them it is impossible to take a birth in a standing position, so here we go. They change the concept and it works very well. Good job, for you guys.’, added Miss Sonia. Eka Maryani as a director was very proud of their friends, because it was beyond her expectation. Their friends gave more than what she already expected and it was because they trust each other. ‘Without trust, there will be nothing. So, for next performances, trust each other is a must. Good luck.’, said her ending her words.

An Awesome Performance by The FIRST: Wrinkled Heart

The second performance was held on 20^th of December 2014 at Open Stage, Kampus Bawah, UNDIKSHA. The nuance of absurdity had been felt when we entered the labyrinth which was fulfilled by some small branches complete with some leaves in it. It seemed like we were in a new world. The main cast of this performance is Sarika Haera who successfully makes all of the audiences speechless during the performance.

After the performance, Kadek Sonia Piscayati as writer of the script also gave a little bit explanation about one of her script: Wrinkled Heart which was performed that night. She said that it is about a woman who is lost in foreign country and her heart is wrinkled. That woman is always wondering where she is. In addition, she said that it was one of her experience when she was in Australia.

The Last Drama Performance: ‘I’m done with you’ doesn’t mean we have done one another

I’m done with you. Have we done? No. Not yet since we were not anywhere yet.

The fifth semesters’ drama performance had done but it didn’t mean that the fifth semesters and the literature lecturer had done one another. A day after Christmas and at the same time a day before Kuningan Day, 26^th of December 2014 the last drama performance from A. K. Team (Alih Kredit crew) was held. It’s not merely a day. It was a special day, a great chance for Kadek Sonia Pisyacanti as the script writer and at the same time as the literature lecturer to announce the gorgeous appreciation. But before the gorgeous appreciation was announced, representatives from each class were invited to give their impression about the drama production process which is including of strength, weaknesses, and value that they felt.

Arya Bayu as the director of ‘I’m Insane’ said that a lot of things happened during the drama. “A lot of things happened during the drama. Through drama we were laugh, cries together. Different opinion came out. A lot of interpretation, a lot of characters appeared. This drama was full of value. It seems that my friends and I stuck on the drama performance. We won’t forget this drama’s value,” said Bayu. Sonia agreed Bayu’s statement. She asked all of the audience what would literature class will be without performance. Clapping hands was the audience’s answer toward her question. She added that drama is the only time to share a lot of memories among classmates. And she was only the bridge of it.

Furthermore, Eka Maryani, the representative of Chapsa class said that drama was time to tighten relationship and gain togetherness not only among classmates but also among fifth semesters. “At first I didn’t imagine that we work with all of the fifth semester in succeeding one another’s performance,” Eka said.

Finally what has been waiting was announced. There were seven rewards announced for those who deserved to be the best. The best class was dedicated to ‘The First (class 5F)’. This appreciation proved that The First was the most solid class which has uniqueness in building cooperation among friends. Sonia said that The First had growing so well since literature 1 course. “They were growing from zero to hero,” Sonia said.

Moreover, ‘I’m insane’ which was performed by A Team was rewarded as the best production. Sonia said that A Team had done a smart production from beginning till the end; not merely on production but also since pre-production till post-production. She also said that A Team has done a solid production with professional rehearsal.

Another appreciation went to InDEED class (5D) for the best chorus. Sonia said that InDEEED has working hard in chorus. “Chorus is not merely chorus. They had contributed to the whole performance. InDEED deserved for the best chorus,” she said.

The rest appreciations, for who had worked very serious in making the concept of the poster, trailer and the publication, Sonia delivered the reward to A Team ‘I’m Insane’.

Eva Patra Sari from InDEED production was crowned as the best actress. Sonia said it was hard to decide. She had found some candidates for the one who would be eligible. Finally she came with Eva Patra Sari as the final decision.

No production without director. Thus for the fabulous concept of the director in interpreting Sonia’s script, Nenty was chosen as the best director. Sonia complimented Nenty’s effort which has been worked very hard in silence, passiveness and secret since their rehearsal never seen by the other classes. Sonia said that in silence, InDEED want to say something through their magnificent performance. Thus the best performance went to ‘The Voice Within (InDEED Production).
